What
is FLAC?
FLAC is a lossless audio codec, which means that there is no
degradation in sound quality, unlike mpeg layer 3 (.mp3).
How big are .flac
files compared to .mp3 files?
Depending on the song length, they can be three or four times the size
as mp3s. Files from glitched.org range from 15-27 megabytes.
Why would I want
a .flac version? The .mp3 sounds fine.
Because
a .flac file is 100% true to the original. Not one byte is
lost
during compression. The file that is encoded is the same file
that is decoded. Depending on the rate at which the .mp3 was
encoded, the sound may suffer.
Do I need any
special software to play a .flac file?
No,
probably not. Most software audio players have the codec
installed if not, it's as easy as checking the main FLAC site for a
plugin. Winamp ships with it.
What do I do with
a .flac file once I have downloaded it?
Anything
you want. You can play it on your computer as a file, you can
decode it and burn it to a cd or have iTunes encode it for your ipod...
The point is, if you want to listen to it in your car or stereo, you have to decode it and burn the wav files as audio.
How do I decode a .fla file to .wav so I can burn an audio cd? Easy. Download the FLAC installer, open the FLAC Front End app, drop your files, and hit Decode.
What about licensing, DRM, and all that? The files on glitched.org are not protected, but they are copyrighted works.
You
may not alter, edit, manipulate, transmit or sell the .flac files.
You can burn them on as many CDs as you want. If you really
want to share my music, just point people here. There are plenty
of free mp3s to listen to.
